How The Futon Chair Bed Helped My Son To Concentrate

I love the futon chair bed, I am an absolute convert. To start with I thought that they would be uncomfortable both as a chair and a bed, but I could not have been more wrong.

I first looked at these when I was trying to make my sons room more practical and appealing for him. He was never particularly interested in books and he was starting to fall behind slightly at school with his reading. However much I sat with him, he was never really interested. I had started by looking at desks and tables to put in his room, but they all seemed expensive and I was unsure about spending money on something which would not get used.

Someone suggested to me that I should create a space for him to explore books on his own, rather than a place to learn. Not being convinced I simply went out and bought a futon chair bed, thinking that if he never sat on it at least I hadn’t wasted too much money and I could always use it as a bed when his cousin came to stay.

There was a special offer on at the time for one with footballs on, so that was the one we got. As soon as it arrived he wanted to sit in it. Within a couple of days I noticed that whenever he was in his room he was sitting in it. It was as if he suddenly had a seat to wind down in. At first he would sit and play with his Transformers or other toys, however, within a couple of weeks he was sitting and flicking through books and kids magazines. I could not believe the change that it made.

It is very easy to over supervise your kids on the things that you think are important. But every time when you sit down with them they feel some sort of pressure to perform and start to find it stressful. By giving them a space to do the same thing, on their own, without feeling you eyes boring into them, they suddenly get what you have been trying to achieve. Most children want to learn and they want to please.

The futon chair bed really is the best investment you can make for a child’s room. It is a cheap and practical piece of furniture, but above all it appeals to them and it is a piece of furniture which is totally theirs. I could never have imagined that such a simple thing would so drastically improve my son’s concentration.
